PURPOSE: To obtain an optical fiber having excellent heat resistance and mechanical strength by having a core consisting of a copolymer contg. a specific (meth) acrylate and multifunctional monomer as essential constituting components.
CONSTITUTION: This optical fiber has the core consisting of the copolymer contg. the (meth)acrylate I expressed by the formula [I] (where R1 denotes hydrogen or methyl group), the (meth)acrylate II expressed by the formula [II] (where R2 denotes hydrogen or methyl group, R3 denotes an alkyl group, cycloalkyl group or arom. group of 1W8C) and the multifunctional monomer as the essential constituting components. More specifically, the (meth)acrylate I has a three-dimensionally bulky tricyclo[5.2.1.02.6]decane-8-il group of large excluded volume at the side chain and exhibits an excellent effect with respect to heat resistance and low hygroscopicity. The mechanical strength is improved by incorporating the (meth)acrylate II therein. The heat resistance is further improved by incorporating the multifunctional monomer therein. In addition, the mixture becomes a thermosetting resin and permits continuous polymn. spinning.
