To control a plate width variation and produce a cold rolled steel strip with a high dimensional accuracy and high yield rate by regulating rolling conditions in compliance with the change of the rolling speed which varies before and after the item to be produced changes.
The equation model is prepared beforehand showing a plate width variation at the exit of the final stand using variables such as a rolling load variation in compliance with a rolling speed variation at each stand of a cold tandem rolling mill, a variation of tensile force between stands and a variation by a shape control means at each stand. When the rolling speed changes, the rolling load variation at each stand and the tensile force variation between stands which are calculated based on the related formula showing the relationship between the rolling speed and rolling load prepared beforehand are input in the said equation model, and the control amount by the shape control means at each stand is corrected in order to have the plate width variation at the exit of the final stand accorded with the target value. In case the tensile force between stands is not used as a plate thickness control means, the tensile force between stands is corrected in addition to the control amount by the shape control means at each stand.
