PURPOSE: To obtain a novel polyvinyl ether alcohol which is an intermediate product for easily and efficiently yielding a polyether sulfonate which is a surfactant, such as detergents and cleaners, without the occurrence of problems, such as of poisons, environment and waste disposal.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I (R is a 1 to 25C alkyl, a 2 to 25C alkenyl, etc., A is a 2 to 4C 1,2-alkylene; (n) is 1 to 20). The compd. of formula I is obtd. by using 1 to 2 mol vinyloxysilane to 1 mod of a compd. of formula II and brining these compds. into reaction under atm. pressure or 10 bar pressure in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide. A compd. of formula III (M is H, an alkaline metal, ammonium) is obtd. by brining the compd. of formula I into reaction with a mixture composed of the hydrogen sulfite of an alkaline metal and the sulfite of the alkaline metal.
