PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity (5-fluoro-2-nitro-4-heterocyclyl-phenoxy)-acetic acid deriv. useful as a herbicide intermediate in a high yield by reacting a novel compd. with a hydroxyacetic acid deriv. in the presence of a diluent.
CONSTITUTION: A novel 1-heterocyclyl-2,4-difluoro-5-nitrobenzene deriv. of formula I [wherein Het is a group of formula II (wherein R1 is H, halogen, etc.; R2 is H, cyano, nitro, etc.; and R3 is H, alkyl, etc.), etc.], is reacted with a hydroxyacetic acid deriv. of formula III (wherein Z is cyano, carboxyl, or alkoxycarbonyl) and an alkali metal salt thereof in the presence of a diluent to give the (5-fluor-2-nitro-4-heterocyclylphenoxy)-acetic acid deriv. of formula IV. The reaction is conducted pref. in the presence of an acid acceptor (e.g. lithium hydride or sodium hydride) at -20°C to 100°C, pref. -5°C to 50°C, still pref. 0-30°C.
