PURPOSE: To obtain the subject pyrocatecholic compounds such as L-DOPA, etc., simply and in high yields, useful for treatment of Parkinson's disease by carrying out the reaction of monophenolic compounds with oxygen under the presence of monophenol monooxygenase and a metal ion.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of monophenolic compounds and oxygen containing gas is carried out under the presence of the 0.1 to 0.2 mole of the metal ion capable of forming a complex with pyrocatecholic compounds per mole of the product pyrocatecholic compounds, and the monophenol monooxygenase in an aqueous solution of pH 4 to 11. The preferable reaction temperature is 10 to 45°C. The monophenol monooxygenase is preferably obtained by extracting and separating from mushroom, potato, etc. For example, Fe2+ is used as the metal ion.
