To provide an extremely small image observation device which produces a sharp observation image with a small aberration and a small distortion even in a wide angle of field.
Rays emitting from an image display device 7 enter a fourth face 6 of an eyepiece optical system 12, and are subjected to total reflection on a third face 5 to the side of an observer's pupil 1, subjected to total reflection on a first face 3 disposed in front of the observer's pupil 1, reflected on a second face 4 to the side of the observer's pupil 1, transmitted through the first face 3 and projected into an observer's eyeball 15 rendering the observer's iris into an exit pupil 1. When an external image is to be observed, rays from the external object points enter the third face 5 and are transmitted through the first face 3 and projected into the observer's eyeball 15.
