To provide a process which can be suitably used for inexpensively producing, in a high yield, cinchona alkaloids which are the catalysts or synthetic intermediates of the catalysts in the asymmetric 1,4-addition reaction for ,-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
The process of producing 9-aminocinchona alkaloids of formula (5) (wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group and R2 is hydrogen or an alkoxy group) comprises reacting cinchona alkaloids of formula (1) (wherein R1 and R2 are the same as defined above) with a halogenated sulfonyl compound in the presence of a base to produce 9-substituted sulfonyloxycinchona alkaloids, and successively reacting the 9-substituted sulfonyloxycinchona alkaloids with an azide salt of an alkali metal or the like to produce 9-azidocinchona alkaloids, and reacting the 9-azidocinchona alkaloids with a reducing agent.
