Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems on an adverse effect on the working environment by the free formaldehyde in a phenolic resin composition, and reduction in water solubility, an increase in the viscosity, of the resin due to detereoration with time, and to the transporting, the maintenance cost of the composition.
SOLUTION: A curable binder containing (a) a powdery water-soluble alkaline phenolic resin which comprises a phenolic resin having a number-average molecular weight of 400 or higher and a methylol group and which contains an alkali metal in an amount of 0.1-1.2 equivalents for 1 equivalent of the phenolic hydroxyl group, (b) water or a mixture of water and a silane coupling agent, and (c) an acidic substance having an acid dissociation constant pKa in an aqueous solution at 25°C of 9.82 or lower, a substance capable of producing acidic substances is contacted with an alkali metal, an organic ester, or a combination thereof and then cured.
