Abstract:
PURPOSE: To efficiently produce an alcohol in a high yield by hydrogenating a carbonyl compound in the presence of a homogenized hydrogenation catalyst, a base and a nitrogen-containing organic compound.
CONSTITUTION: A carbonyl compound is hydrogenated in the presence of a homogeneous hydrogenation catalyst, a base (suitably an alkali metal) and a nitrogen-containing organic compound (suitably amine), preferably at 3-50 atmospheric pressure and at 15-100°C to give this alcohol. As a homogeneous hydrogenation catalyst, a complex of a metal in group VIII such as RuCl2[P(C6 H5)3]4 is preferable. This catalyst is preferably used at a molar ratio of 1/500 to 1/10,000 to the carbonyl compound. The amount of the base is 2 to 40 equivalent based on the metal complex catalyst, while the amine is 2 to 4 equivalents in the case of a nonoamine and 1 to 2 equivalents in the case of a diamine. When acetophenone is used as a carbonyl compound, phenethyl alcohol is obtained as product.
