PURPOSE: To obtain an aldehyde at a good selection rate by bringing an alkyl ester formate and gas composed mainly of carbon monoxide into reaction under specific conditions in the presence of metallic catalyst: iodine contg. cocatalyst and a cyclic alkylamide solvent which are respectively specific.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compd. of the formula R-CHO is selectively obtain. by bringing a compd. of the formula H-COOR (R is an alkyl) and the gas composed mainly of CO into reaction in the presence of (a) 10-2 to 10-4 mol, respectively for 1 mol of the former, of the catalyst based on the metal selected from Rh, Ru, Ir, their mixture or a mixture composed thereof and Co, Ni or Fe, (b) 4×10-2 to 0.25×10-2 mol of the cocatalyst selected from the mixtures composed of the iodides of alkaline metals, alkaline earth metals, quaternary ammonium or phosphonium or the covalent compds. of iodine and a compd. of the formula PR3' or NR3" (R3' is an alkyl, an aryl; R3" is an alkyl) and (c) ≥1 mol solvent consisting of the cyclic (1 to 4C alkyl) amide.
