To industrially and advantageously produce the subject compound in good yield even without providing a dehydrating step by reacting an alkali metal salt of acetoacetic acid with a specific aldehyde in the presence of decahydroisoquinoline in a specified mixed solvent.
(A) An alkali metal salt of acetoacetic acid is reacted with (B) an aldehyde represented by the formula R1CHO (R1 is an aliphatic group, an alicyclic group, a heterocyclic group or the like having a side chain at the 1-position, preferably 4-tetrahydropyranyl or 3-tetrahydrothiopyranyl) in the presence of (C) decahydroisoquinoline in (D) a mixed solvent of (i) water with (ii) a sparingly water-soluble organic solvent to thereby produce a compound represented by formula I. Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out by adding 10-1,000 mL of the component (ii) to an aqueous solution of the component A in an amount of 1-3 mol based on 1 mol of the component B and further adding the component C in an amount of 0.05-0.20 mol based on 1 mol of the component B. Thereby, the compound useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals and medicines, especially herbicides can be obtained.
