Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to write refractive index gratings into an optical fiber which is as coated by preparing the specific silica-base optical fiber having a Ge-doped core exposed to a photosensitive agent and exposing this optical fiber to chemical rays in such a manner that the refractive index gratings are formed in the core.
SOLUTION: The silica-base optical fiber 55 (having the core doped with the Ge) exposed to the photosensitive agent is prepd. This optical fiber 55 is exposed to the chemical rays 52 in such a manner that the gratings are formed in the core. The optical fiber 55 has a sufficient concn. of germanium oxide defect centers. This concn. is the concn. at which the fiber having the photosensitivity of at least 2 times and more preferably ≥10 times the photosensitivity of the other optical fibers having the same performance may be provided. The photosensitivity is defined by Δn/(dosing quantity of the chemical rays) and Δn indicates the refractive index change by exposure of the optical fiber 55 to the prescribed quantity of the chemical rays 52.
