PURPOSE: To readily obtain the title compound containing a new compound useful as an intermediate for production of carbapenem based antibiotic used in a medicine in good yield by reacting a specific enolate compound used as a nucleophilic agent with specific nitrones.

CONSTITUTION: An enolate compound expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are H, (protected) OH or alkyl (substituted by acyl), provided that R1 and R2 are simultaneously H; R3 is OH, amino or mercapto which were substituted; M is (substituted) metal] is reacted with nitrones expressed by formula II [R4 is alkyl, aralkyl or (substituted) alkoxyaryl; R5 and R6 are H, alkyl, aryl, acyl or (protected) hydroxyalkyl or R4 is combined with R5 or R6 to form a (substituted) alkylene chain which may be interrupted by a hetero atom to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula III (when R1 to R6 and M are same compounds as the above-mentioned compounds or R1 is alkyl substituted by OH and when R5 or R6 is acyl, R1 is combined with R5 or R6 to form lactone) which is a new compound.
