To obtain the subject compound that is useful as a starting material for a plastic lens, optical element and the like by reaction of chloroformate derivative with alcohol derivative in the presence of phase-transfer catalyst and alkali.
The objective compound of formula II is prepared by reaction of a compound of formula I [A is an organic group bearing a polymerizable function group, for example, (meth)acrylate or allyl group], typically 2-(meth) acryloyloxy-ethyl chloroformate with a compound of the formula: HO-B-OH (B is an aromatic group including aromatic ring, for example, benzene ring), typically bisphenol-A or methylene-bisphenol in water in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst, for example, ammonium salt or sulfonium salt and an alkali, for example, sodium hydroxide. This reaction process can shorten the reaction time and attain high yield. Moreover, this process does not employ pyridine and can avoid the problems on toxicity.
