To obtain a compound that is useful as a liquid crystal polymer.

This compound is represented by the formula: Y1-A1-M1-A2-Y2 [Y1 and Y2 differ from each other and Y1 is an acrylate residue a methacrylate residue; Y2 is a residue of vinyl ether, epoxy or azide; A1 and A2 are each a residue of the formula; CnH2n (n is 0-20); M1 has a formula: -R1-X1-R2-X2-R3-X3- R4 (R1-R4 are each O, CONH, S, CH=N; X1-X3 are each a residue of 1,4- phenylene-or 1,4-cyclo-hexylene)]. The objective liquid crystal polymer is produced by polymerization through the reactions of the group Y1 of acrylate or methacrylate group of the above-stated compound or a mixture of plurality of compounds followed by crosslinking of the prepolymer by the reaction of the groups Y2 such as vinyl ether, epoxy or azide. Thus, the polymer is improved in its handleability and processability, especially the two-step process can be made possible for the production of liquid crystal polymer.
