Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject particle having layers having mutually prescribed different refractive indexes, reduced in its smell, excellent in its opacity and luster, and useful as an organic pigment for coating paper, etc., by forming outer layers on a specific core particle under a specific condition, and subsequently swelling the particles.
CONSTITUTION: (B) Vinylic monomers containing 5-80wt.% of an acidic functional vinylic monomer is added in a weight of 1-10 times that of a component A and polymerized in the presence of (A) the core particles to form an outer layer. Further, (C) a vinylic monomer not containing the acidic functional vinylic monomer is added and polymerized in the presence of 0.1-10wt.% of a nonionic surfactant to form the outermost layer. The produced particles are mixed with an inorganic basic substance to neutralize and swell a carboxylic acid in the particles, and subsequently dried to provide the objective particles having particle diameters of 0.3-5.0μm and having the layers having mutually different refractive indexes. The core particles A comprise a polymer which is produced by emulsion-polymerizing vinylic monomers containing 50-99wt.% of an aromatic vinylic monomer and 1-10wt.% of a crosslinking vinylic monomer and which has a refractive index of ≥1.50.
