To produce a dicarboxylic acid in high yield by reacting an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid ester with carbon monoxide in an acid in the presence of a univalent compound of a group IB metal and contacting the reaction product with water.
The objective compound is produced by reacting (A) an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid ester with (B) carbon monoxide in (C) an acid having a concentration of preferably ≥80 wt.% (sulfuric acid, boron trifluoride complex, hydrogen fluoride, fluorosulfuric acid, etc.), in the presence of (D) a univalent compound of a group IB metal (e.g. cuprous oxide, argentous oxide and aurous oxide) preferably at 0-80°C under a pressure of 0-150 kg/cm2G and contacting the reaction product with water. In the above reaction the amount of the component D is preferably 0.1-4 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the component C and that of the component C is preferably 50-10,000 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the component A.
