Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a process for production of glycolic acid, glycolic esters, or polyglycolide where the operations can be continued actively and stably for a long period of time, accompanied by reduced corrosion of the reactor vessels because no carboxylic acid ester is needed for use as a starting substance, and the product can be separated in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: Formaldehyde and carbon monoxide are subjected to polymerization reaction in the presence of heteropolyacid and the product is subjected to hydrolysis or alcoholysis. These reactions can be carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent. When a solvent is employed, it is preferred to remove the solvent remaining in the reaction product before the hydrolysis or alcoholysis. The heteropolyacid is preferably fired before the reaction.
