To easily obtain an isoimide by reaction of a compound bearing carboxyl and amide groups in the identical molecule in the presence of a haloiminium salt and a basic substance.
This isoimide bearing an isoimido linkage of formula III in the molecule is obtained by reaction of a compound of e.g. formula I (R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon, aliphatic group or aromatic group; R2 is a monovalent hydrocarbon, aliphatic group or aromatic group), or between a compound of e.g. formula II (R12 and R13 are each a monovalent hydrocarbon, etc.) bearing an amido linkage and a carboxyl-bearing compound in the presence of a haloiminium salt such as N,N-dimethylchloromethyleneiminium chloride at 0.8-6 equivalent times the carboxyl group and a basic substance such as trimethylamine at 1-10 equivalent times the hydrogen halide formed by reaction between the haloiminium salt and the carboxyl group.
