To provide an improved production method for 3,3-dimethylbutanal which is a useful raw material for producing N-[N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-1-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine=1-methylester (neotame).

The production method of 3,3-dimethylbutanal comprises the following. Intermediate 3,3-dimethylbutanol is obtained by (1) hydrolyzing a 3,3-dimethylbutyl ester obtained by reacting isobutylene, ethylene, and a mineral acid, alternatively by (2) contacting 3,3-dimethylbutanoic acid or an ester thereof with a reducing agent, or (3) by hydrolyzing a substrate chosen from a group consisting of 1-halo-3,3-dimethylbutane and 1-acyloxy-3,3-dimethylbutane, and further catalyst-dehydrogenation of the alcohol is carried out.
