PURPOSE: To easily obtain at a low cost in high yield the title compound useful as a photofading preventive or an intermediate therefor by reaction between a diol and an aniline derivative in the presence of a metallic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula III can be obtained by reaction, when needed, in a solvent (e.g. dioxane) between (A) a diol of formula I (Z is metalloid necessary for forming five to seven-membered heterocycle together with N, containing -SO or -SO2, when cyclized) and (B) 10-500mol%, based on the component A, of an aniline derivative of formula II (R is substituent such as alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, nitro or halogen; n is 0-5) in the presence of (C) 0.001-20mol%, based on the component A, of a metallic catalyst (e.g. Co).
