Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the title resin in good yields without encountering problems of corrosion and waste liquor disposal by reacting p-xylylene glycol with a phenol in a specified molar ratio in the presence of an acid catalyst under specified temperature conditions and dehydrating the reaction mixture in a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:p-Xylylene glycol is reacted with a phenol in a p-xylylene glycol to phenol molar ratio of 0.1-0.7 at 100-150 deg.C in the presence of an acid catalyst, and the reaction mixture is dehydrated in a vacuum at 150 deg.C or above. According to the above process, a phenol/aralkyl resin can be produced in good yields without forming by-products such as an acid or an alcohol, therefore without encountering problems of corrosion or waste liquor disposal.
