PURPOSE: To obtain in high yield and selectivity a terpene diphenol resin as a feedstock for epoxy resins and curing agents therefor, a developer, or a feedstock for polymers such as polysulfone, by reaction of a phenol compound with a cyclic terpene compound using as catalyst a heteropoly-acid.
CONSTITUTION: The resin of formula I or II [A and A' are each of formula III or IV (n is 0-4; m is 0-6; R1 and R2 are each OH, alkyl, phenyl, alkoxyl or halogen)] can be obtained by reaction of a phenol compound (e.g. phenol, hydroquinone, naphthol) with a cyclic terpene compound (e.g. limonene, dipentyne, α- or β-pinene) using, as catalyst, pref. ca.0.05-5wt.%, based on the total weight of the cyclic terpene compound and phenol compound, of a heteropoly-acid (pref. phosphotangstic acid, phosphomolybdic acid, silicotangstic acid or silicomolybdic acid).
