Title:
PRODUCTION OF TERTIARY BUTYL ALCOHOL FROM ISOBUTANE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH0859527
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To produce tertiary butyl alcohol by non-catalytically reacting isobutane with oxygen to provide a reaction mixture including t-butyl alcohol and t-butyl hydroperoxide, then converting the t-butyl hydroperoxide into t-butyl alcohol.

Oxygen and isobutane are fed from a line 12 and line 14 into an oxidation reactor 10, respectively. In the reactor, the isobutane is non- catalytically oxidized to prepare the first liquid reaction mixture 16 including t-butyl hydroperoxide and t-butyl alcohol. Then, the reaction mixture 16 is passed through the first distillation column 20 and at least a part of the reaction mixture is brought into contact with the catalyst for decomposing the soluble peroxide in the first decomposition zone to convert a part of the t-butyl hydroperoxide to t-butyl alcohol thereby obtaining the second liquid reaction mixture 44. Then, the second liquid reaction mixture 44 is treated with a soluble hydroperoxide decomposition catalyst in the second decomposition zone to decompose the remaining hydroperoxide. Thus, substantially peroxide-free t-butyl alcohol is obtained.
