PURPOSE: To obtain trioxane which is useful as an industrial plastic with a minimum energy requirement reducing problems of waste disposal and environmental protection by decomposing an acetal polymer in the presence of water and an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Homo- and/or co-polymers of formaldehyde and optionally a cyclic formal are subjected to decomposition in the presence of water and an acid catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid) at 50-150°C using a reactor of forcible circulation type thereby obtaining trioxane. Water is added in such an amount that makes the calculated content of the formaldehyde in the reactor to be 50-90 wt.%, and the quantity of the acid catalyst to by used is 1-60 wt.% for the reaction mixture. Polyacetal is recycled and directly reused for copolymerization.
