PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a strong electron-accepting compound for electrolytic capacitor, electronic material, etc., easily, in high yield and purity, by recrystallizing tetracyanoquinodimethane from an organic solvent in the presence of a halogen.
CONSTITUTION: Tetracyanoquinodimethane (abbreviated as TCNQ) contaminated with a complex, etc., is dissolved in an organic solvent such as acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, etc., under heating in the presence of a halogen or a halogen compound, and the solution is cooled or the solvent is distilled off from the solution to obtain the objective compound. The amount of halogen, etc., is 1W60pts.(wt.), preferably 5W30pts. per 100pts. of TCNQ. N-bromosuccinimide, phosphorus pentachloride, etc., can be used as the halogen or halogen compound.
