NEW MATERIAL:A 5-[2'-(trans-4''-alkylcylcohexyl)ethyl]-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl) pyrimidine shown by formula I (R is 1-10C straight-chain alkyl).

EXAMPLE: 5-[2'-(trans-4''-Propylcylcohexyl)ethyl]-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)pyrimidine.

USE: Useful as an electro-optical display material and a component for liquid crystal composition especially suitable for low-voltage driving. Having large anisotropy of dielectric constant and low viscosity and being blended with another liquid crystal composition or liquid crystal compound so that a liquid crystal composition having high transparent point and low threshold voltage can be obtained without raising viscosity.

PREPARATION: A compound shown by formula II is reacted with diethyl malonate. On the other hand, a compound shown by formula III is reacted with a chlorine gas and then with an ammonia gas. The two kinds of the reaction products are reacted and subjected through a compound shown by formula IV to several processes to give a compound shown by formula I.
