To provide a technique capable of improving security in a radio communication system.
The radio communication system is provided with three authentication modes, i.e.: an automatic authentication mode in which when the responder carried by a user enters an authentication area and receives an activation signal 1, a control section generates a response signal 1, the responder returns the response signal 1 to an interrogator from a radio transmission unit by a second radio communication system (UHF); a hand-holding-over authentication mode in which when the responder carried by the user enters an authentication area and receives an activation signal 2, the control section generates a response signal 2, and the responder returns the response signal 2 to the interrogator from a radio transmission/reception unit by a first radio communication system (LF); and a manual authentication mode in which when the responder carried by the user enters the authentication area and receives an activation signal 3 and then the operation section performs operation, the control section generates a response signal 3 and the responder returns the response signal 3 to the interrogator from the radio transmission section by a second radio communication system (UHF).
