Abstract:

To provide an implantable medical device that may be coated to minimize or substantially eliminate a biological vital reaction.

The medical device comprises at least one kind of radioprotective composition or compound incorporated into a polymeric matrix fixed to the surface of a stent. The composition or compound elutes from the polymeric matrix over a fixed period of time and enters the surrounding tissue to protect the tissue from ionizing radiation. A lubricating coat 500 is fixed to the outer surface part of a polymeric coat. Various drugs, medicaments or compositions can be incorporated into a specified polymeric matrix. A stent zone portion 102 has a base coat 502 containing a specified polymer and rapamycin, and an upper coat 504 or a diffusion layer 504 containing a specified polymer. The lubricating coating 500 can be fixed to the upper coat 502 by a suitable means.
