PURPOSE: To prevent false detection and to obtain a correct detection output by continuing a reproducing when a high frequency signal is detected and detaching a recording medium from a turntable when it is not detected, after an arbitrary prescribed time passes from the time of starting the reproducing.

CONSTITUTION: When a disc-shaped recording medium 1 is mounted on a turntable 7 and a reproducing condition is made, a disc motor 2 is rotated, the high frequency signal detected from an information detector 3 is processed by a signal processing circuit 4, and information is reproduced. After the arbitrary prescribed time passes from the time of starting the reproducing, when the high frequency signal is detected, the reproducing is continued, and when it is not detected, a control circuit 5 sends a detaching signal to a recording medium fitting and detaching device 6 and detaches the medium 1 from the table 7. Consequently, even when the medium 1 is mounted on the table with the unrecorded surface thereof turned to a device 3 and the reproducing is executed, it is immediately detected that the surface is unrecorded. Thus, the false detection is prevented, and the correct detection output can be obtained.
