To reduce a peak torque of a motor to be used for a ribbon winding mechanism and to reduce the motor for driving in size and in cost.

The ribbon winding device comprises a ratchet wheel 5 provided to a ribbon winding shaft 4, a feed pawl 6 meshed with the ratchet wheel 5, a displacement member 9 which is displaced by being driven by a motor 11 so as to receive a displacement amount in at least the straight direction, a slide member 3 for moving the feed pawl 6, and an elastic member 15. The ribbon winding device is so constituted that the slide member is urged in a direction the same as an urging direction of the elastic member by the driving force of the motor in a condition that the elastic member is engaged with the slide member having a ribbon feed pawl for winding the ribbon and the slide member is urged in one direction by the elastic member. As a result of the above structure, a load of feeding the ribbon or a load of switching the ribbon feed pawl is cooperatively shared by the elastic member and the motor, and then the torque of the motor is reduced, thereby realizing the use of a low cost motor having low performance.
