To provide a rice cooker which can save its backup power source until it is actually used by a customer or when it is not used for a long period after factory shipment.
The rice cooker is provided with a pot 1 in which an object to be cooked is put, heating means 2 for heating the pot 1, a display means 3 which indicates the time, the state of rice cooking or the like, an operation means 4 which instructs the time, setting or start of rice cooking or the like, a power failure detection means 5 which detects power supply from a commercial power source, the backup power source 6 which supplies power when no power is supplied from the commercial power source, and a control means 8 which controls the heating means 2 and the display means 3. When a predetermined operation is performed by the operation means 4, the control means 8 switches off the display means 3. When detecting energization after detection of power failure by the power failure detection means 5, it switches on the display means 3. In this manner, the display means 3 can be stopped as necessary and the backup power source can be saved during a long unused period.
