PURPOSE: To relatively inexpensively obtain para-lower alkylanilines by reacting lower alkanol and aniline within a specific temp. range in the presence of an acidic y-type zeolite catalyst being a synthetic material.
CONSTITUTION: Lower alkanol (e.g.; methanol) and aniline (e.g.; Nmethylaniline) are used in a molar ratio of 1:3 and reacted in the presence of an acidic y-type zeolite catalyst at 300-500°C (pref., 350-450°C) to obtain para-lower alkylaniline. The above catalyst has a pore size of 8-10 and three-dimensional tubular channels and, for example, zeolite LZ-Y20 or zeolite LZ-Y52 is designated. This y-type zeolite catalyst is relatively inexpensive because it has a long life of 100 hr or more and heated to high temp. in the presence of oxygen to be re-activated. The reaction is executed in a vapor phase or a liquid phase.
