Title:
SINTERED ABRASIVE PARTICLES, METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME, AND ABRASIVE ARTICLES INCLUDING THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2019178061
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
To provide a method of making abrasive particles capable of reducing complexity and cost by omitting the use of alpha alumina kinds employed in conventional methods of making abrasive particles via a precursor by sol-gel processes.SOLUTION: The method includes passing precursor particles through a flame 130 to convert the precursor particles to sintered abrasive particles 140. The precursor particles are a calcined precursor 110 and have an average particle size less than or equal to 500 μm. Shaped abrasive particles have a cellular microstructure comprising alpha alumina crystal grains of alpha alumina having a maximum dimension less than about 3 μm, have an average particle size less than or equal to 500 μm, and are essentially free of seed particles and alpha alumina grain size modifiers. The alpha alumina has an areal porosity less than or equal to 5 percent. Abrasive articles comprising a binder and a plurality of the sintered abrasive particles are also disclosed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
