To surely detect a slip of a belt by simple structure of the reduced number of part items.
A motor rotational frequency of a starter motor is detected by a motor rotational frequency sensor, in a step S1, when driving force is transmitted from a driving pulley provided in the starter motor to a crank pulley provided in a crankshaft of an engine, by a belt, and a motor rotational frequency signal is filtered by a band-pass filter in a step S2. When a specified frequency of vibration component resulting from the slip is not detected in a step S3, the absence of the slip in the belt is judged to maintain a torque of the starter motor in a step S4, and the presence of the slip in the belt is judged to reduce the torque of the starter motor in a step S5, so as to converge the slip, when the specified frequency of vibration component is detected. The number of part items is reduced thereby because only the motor rotational frequency of the starter motor is detected by this manner, and because an engine speed is not required to be detected.
