Abstract:
To provide smart functionality to discrete elements of a processing plant.SOLUTION: A signal characterization component includes: a first communication interface configured to be connected to a first channel coupling the signal characterization component to a processing controller; a second communication interface configured to be connected to a second channel coupling the signal characterization component to a processing control device, in which the processing control device is coupled to a plurality of discrete I/O channels for one or more field devices; and one or more circuits that are communicatively coupled to the first communication interface and the second communication interface and that (i) transmit, through the second channel, a discrete output (DO) message encoded with one or more commands received through the first channel and (ii) transmit, through the first channel, one or more sets of information decoded from a discrete input (DI) message received through the second channel.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
