The soft closer is composed of a rack 22 provided at a casing 12; a damper base 33 enclosed in the casing 12 and provided movably along the longitudinal direction; a rotary damper 43 comprising a rotation suppressing part 44 rotatably fitted to a rotation body 52 meshed with the rack 22, to suppress the rotation of the rotation body 52; a hook 39 journalled at its intermediate part swingingly to the damper base 33 and energized by a closing spring 24; and a locking part 48 for exhibiting a damper function in the rotary damper 43 by regulating the rotation of the rotation suppressing part 44 caused by the rotation of the rotation body 52 meshed with the rack 22 by moving the damper base 33 by the contracting force of the closing spring 24, and eliminating the damper function by permitting the rotation of the rotation suppressing part 44 caused by the rotation of the rotation body 52 meshed with the rack 22 by moving the damper base 33 against the contracting force of the closing spring 24.
