This compound useful as the electrochemically active stitch in-type intercalator is represented by the formula Ea-La-X-Lb-Eb (wherein Ea and Eb exhibit oxidation-reduction activity and also are each a group containing a conjugated system; X is a divalent cyclic group; and La and Lb are a connector group not forming respective conjugated systems extending from the conjugated systems Ea and b, and at least one of La and Lb is a connector group having a site imparting water solubility to the above compound or a site capable of being converted into a water solubility-imparting site).
