Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a monofilament medical suture desirable both in cost effectiveness and performance by including as an essential copmonent a copolymer consisting of lactic acid and ε-caprolactone as a recurring unit and also specifying the shrinkage factor.
CONSTITUTION: The suture for an operation is prepared from a copolymer as an essential component consisting of lactic acid and ε-caprolactone as a recurring unit and has the shrinkage factor (at 60°C×20 hours) specified at 5.0% or less. Additionally, in manufacturing the suture, first (process A), in melt spinning and underwater drawing, the copolymer is melt-spun having lactic acid and ε-caprolactone as a recurring unit. Second (process A), redrawing is carried out since the tension strength of a filament is insufficient as a suture after the underwater drawing, enhancing the tension strength. Successively (process C), a thermal setting under tension is performed for the filament. Then (process D), a relaxation treatment is performed without tension so as not to interfere the shrinkage of the filament.
