Title:
THIN FILM AIRBAG
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3960394
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To surely prevent the puncture of thin film airbags by providing two airbags one of which is inserted in the other, using strongly anisotropic materials for the two airbags, and installing the airbags with their preferred tear directions being perpendicular to each other.
CONSTITUTION: A first airbag 110 is placed inside a second airbag 120 and a thin film of the inner airbag 110 is manufactured so that the preferred tear propagation direction is in the vertical direction. The preferred tear direction for a thin film of the outer airbag 120 is in the horizontal direction and two film layers are held together by an adhesive 130. The materials used for the film layers can be the same or different and are generally made from nylon, polyethylene or polyester. The use of different materials for the different layers allows tear propagation and strength properties to complement each other. The outer airbag 120 can be replaced by a net and is attached to the inner airbag 110 by the adhesive 130, a heat seal or the like or is left unattached.
