Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce the title thin film having a small optical transmission loss and superior optical characteristics by forming a thin film of a lithium niobate single crystal on a lithium tantalate substrate added with an element other than Li and Ta to a part of the surface so that the lattice of the thin film is matched to that of the substrate. CONSTITUTION:An element other than Li and Ta, e.g. Mg or Ti is added to at least a part of the surface of a lithium tantalate substrate to form a pattern having a relatively low refractive index at a waveguide forming part. A thin film of a lithium niobate single crystal is then formed on the substrate so that the lattice of the thin film is matched to that of the substrate and a thin film of a lithium niobate single crystal having <=1.4dB/cm optical transmission loss is produced. Since the thin film formed on the above-mentioned pattern becomes a waveguide, a waveguide forming process can be eliminated.
