PURPOSE: To carry out continuous production of a good-quality, high-solid polymer emulsion without formation of coagulate, by effecting emulsion polymerization to a specified conversion in each of a plurality of polymerization zones formed within a single polymerization tank.
CONSTITUTION: A polymerization tank V is so constructed that the temperature of a polymerization reaction can be controlled by hot water passing through an external jacket J. Polymerization material feeds S1WS4 are continuously introduced into the polymerization tank V at constant flow rates through inlets I1,... and I4, respectively, and emulsion-polymerized in polymerization zones Z1,... and Z4, respectively. Each polymerization mixture is transferred, as shown by an arrow, to the subsequent zone through the space between the top of a compartment wall B1,... or B4 and the inside surface of the tank and, after passing aging zones Z5 and Z6, discharged from an exit D as a polymerized product R. In this case, in each polymerization zone, Z1,... or Z4, an emulsion polymerization reaction is effected so that the polymerization mixture transferred to the subsequent zone has a conversion to polymer of at least 70wt%.
