PURPOSE: To efficiently form silver halide particles with a controlled crystal habit by manufacturing a photographic silver halide emulsion by a specified double jet method under growing conditions in which activation energy for the critical growth of silver halide particles is a specified value or above.
CONSTITUTION: When an aqueous soln. of water soluble halide is added to an aqueous soln. of water soluble silver salt and mixed by a double jet method, in at least 70% of the whole period of addition in a stage for growing silver halide particles, the silver halide content is regulated to ≥1.2mol/l, and silver halide is grown under growing conditions in which activation energy for the critical growth of silver halide particles is ≥20kcal/mol when the critical growing speed is measured. At this time, the silver halide is grown in the presence of a substrate which is adsorbed on silver halide particles such as a spectral sensitizer, a desensitizing dye, a stabilizer or an inhibitor to well control the crystal habit. The concn. of the aqueous halide soln. and that of the aqueous silver salt soln. are adjusted to ≥2mol/l each. Thus, a photosensitive material with high optical density is obtd. while reducing the amount of coated silver.
