Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a sylylene glycol with no concomitant by-products such as colored products by reaction of α,α'-dichloroxylene with water while keeping the pH value in the reaction system within a specified range using an alkali metal hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: In producing the xylylene glycol by hydrolysis of α,α'- dichloroxylene, the α,α'-dichloroxylene is made to react with 1-15 wt.times of water at 70-150 (pref. 80-120)°C while keeping the pH value int eh reaction system at ≤9.5 (but ≥4) using 2-5 (pref. 2-3) molar times, based on the α,α'- dichloroxylene, of an alkali metal hydroxide.
