A transfer roll 34Y includes a transfer part 78, which holds an intermediate transfer belt 32 between a photoreceptor drum 18Y and it to transfer a toner image to the intermediate transfer belt 32 by a potential difference occurring between the photoreceptor drum 18Y and it, and a contact part 80 arranged on the opposite side to the transfer part 78 and brought into contact with the inner circumferential face of the intermediate transfer belt 32. A cleaning member 72 putting the intermediate transfer belt 32 between the contact part 80 of the transfer roll 34Y and it is arranged for cleaning residual toner on the intermediate transfer belt 32. In this way, the width directional dimension of the transfer unit 21 is reduced in comparison with the structure wherein an intermediate transfer belt is held between a cleaning member and a tension roll or a drive roll, and consequently, the transfer unit 21 is downsized.
