To solve the two incompatible problems, wherein an image display apparatus using a laser light source, in particular, a portable-type image display apparatus operated in a hand, is required to remove speckle noises and, at the same time, automatically focus at a high speed.
A focal distance is calculated from the speckle noises of a projection image and a distance by which a projection image is moved, thereby achieving high-speed adjustment of a focal distance and the removal of the speckle noises at the same time. Furthermore, since load in an evaluation value calculating circuit (image processing circuit) can be reduced in comparison with that in known technology, power consumed by the equipment can be reduced. In the case of drive by a battery, the lifetime of the battery can be prolonged.
