To provide an image display apparatus and a method for controlling the apparatus to prevent degradation in display quality, even when luminance correction value cannot be read out normally from a nonvolatile memory in a display drive unit.
The image display apparatus 100 is equipped with a plurality of element drive units 10 and one controlling unit 20. The element drive unit 10 drives a light-emitting display element for displaying image and has a first nonvolatile memory 13 which stores a luminance correction data to be used for correcting fluctuation of luminance in each pixel, in a display pixel group 11. The controlling unit 20 controls the plurality of element drive units 10 and has a second nonvolatile memory 23 which stores the luminance correction data for backup.
