PURPOSE: To display a three-dimension like two-dimensional image and intuitively grasp an embedded object, etc., by extracting the maximum value of volume data obtained by scanning, and binarizing the data at the depth obtained at the maximum value as a boundary.
CONSTITUTION: Volume data having a three-dimension-like spread obtained by the search beam of a sensor 1 is stored in a memory 2, and image-processed. First, the maximum value of the stored data is extracted in each radiating direction by a maximum extracting unit 3, and the present position of the surface an embedded object, etc., is detected by the maximum value detection. Then, the unit 3 binarizes the shallower depth '0' and the deeper depth '1' at the extracted maximum value as a boundary. An image forming unit 4 forms a three-dimension-like two-dimensional image based on the data and a display unit 5 displays it.
