PURPOSE: To obtain a utility article and a decorative article having a multicolor film by forming an undercoat layer based on a Zr-compound on a base material, and continuously forming an upper layer film based on a Ti-compound thereon to partially apply masking material thereto and peeling off only the upper layer film at the unmasked part before peeling off the masking material.
CONSTITUTION: A wristwatch case made of a hard alloy is set to a high frequency ion plating apparatus and, after this apparatus is evacuated up to 10-5 Torr, Zr is evaporated by an electron gun and ionized by a high frequency electric field of 1 kW and nitrogen gas is introduced in an amount of 400 SCCM to form ZrN to the wristwatch case to which voltage of 300V is applied in a thickness of 0.3 μm. Next, the evaporation source is replaced with Ti to evaporate Ti and Ti is ionized by a high frequency electric field of 1 kw to introduce nitrogen gas 600 SCCM and acetylene gas 100 SCCM to form titanium carbonitride in a thickness of 0.5 μm. Thereafter, masking is partically applied to the case using paint of org. pigment and only the titanium carbonitride layer at the unmasked part is peeled off and the paint is subsequently peeled off. As a result, the wristwatch case having a two-tone color consisting of the golden color of ZrN and the pink color of titanium carbonitride is obtained.
