To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine, capable of attaining stable operation of an electric motor and smooth operation of a deceleration mechanism by making air gaps between permanent magnets and rollers uniform in the circumferential direction.
The variable valve system includes: a deceleration mechanism 8 that makes variable a relative rotation phase between a timing sprocket and a cam shaft by decelerating a rotational force of a motor output shaft 13 of an electric motor 12 according to an engine running state and transmitting the rotational force to the cam shaft; a needle bearing 28 for rotatably supporting a motor output shaft on a large-diameter portion of a cylindrical part 9b; and a second ball bearing 35 for rotatably supporting the motor output shaft on a small-diameter portion 9e of the cylindrical part. The size of a second clearance C2 on the second ball bearing side is set to be smaller than a first clearance C1 on the needle bearing side.
